A recent issue of Archaeology Ireland (Spring 2021) features articles on aspects of two excavations undertaken by ACSU, one in County Kerry and the other in County Louth.
‘Hidden profits’, by Michael Kenny and Jon Stirland, highlights the discovery of a cluster of 20 Anglo-Saxon coins that prior to conservation were congealed within a matrix of material that roughly corresponded to the shape of a decomposed leather pouch. This was discovered hidden behind the drystone walling of a cereal-drying kiln at the multi-period site of Haynestown, just south of Dundalk, Co. Louth. The coins are all silver pennies ranging in date from the reign of King Aethelstan (AD 924–39) to that of King Eadgar (AD 959–75), representing a 10th-century coin hoard likely associated with local trade.
