Senior Archaeologist Ian Russell, along with wood specialist Cathy Moore, will present the results of ACSU excavations at Abbey Street Upper, Dublin 1, at the Fiends of Medieval Dublin Conference 2023. This will take place on Saturday, 7 October, in the Trinity Long Room Hub and will feature an overview and discussion of the discovery of a medieval vertical undershot watermill and timber revetments.
This mill lay within the precinct wall of St Mary’s Abbey and was likely in use during the thirteenth century or earlier. Excavations carried out in 2019 uncovered an array of preserved structural and artefactual wood that facilitated an extensive programme of dendrochronological dating. Artefacts of worked bone, leather, glass, metal, worked stone, pottery and tile were all recovered and analysed, along with a collection of animal bone.
