Ian Russell has contributed a discussion on the ninth- and tenth-century Viking winter camps at Woodstown, Co. Waterford, to a newly published volume on Viking Camps: Case Studies and Comparisons (ISBN 9781032389493), edited by Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson and Irene García Losquiño. This multi-disciplinary volume brings together the latest research and thinking on encampments across the Viking world, from their impact on the surrounding landscape and population to their form and function.
Ian directed the archaeological investigations at Woodstown for ACSU between 2003 and 2004 (N25 Waterford City Bypass) and again in 2007 (Supplementary Research Project) and 2018 (Waterford Greenway). The results of much of this work were subsequently published in 2014, in an edited volume by Ian Russell and Dr Maurice F. Hurley (which is available to download, see ACSU Publications: https://archaeologicalconsultancyservices.ie/publications/).
